Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha may be in more trouble than he thought after the ethics watchdog began investigations into his conduct. The investigations follow a recent incident where Magoha was caught on camera allegedly bullying a senior county education official.

Prof Magoha has since last week stuck to his guns, stating that he saw nothing wrong regarding the incident involving Uasin Gishu County Director of Education Dr Gitonga Mbaka over the state of Langas Primary School.

This is despite the huge uproar caused by a video showing the Education CS giving Dr Mbaka a dressing-down in public. An outraged public, a teachers’ union and the Senate have demanded an apology from the CS, with some calling for his resignation or sacking by the President over what they term arrogance.

In the video clip shot last Friday while Prof Magoha made an impromptu visit to Langas Primary School in Eldoret, the CS is seen visibly angry and wildly gesticulating at the Uasin Gishu County director of education, Dr Gitonga Mbaka, whom he calls a “complete fool” in the full glare of cameras, teachers and other officials.

Senators called for the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to take action against him in line with the Public Officer Ethics Act. The lawmakers want President Uhuru Kenyatta to take action against the former Nairobi University Vice Chancellor for insulting a junior education officer, the county Education chief in Uasin Gishu.

They made time in their sitting on Thursday to pile pressure on the CS, who has remained unapologetic. The lawmakers were led by Senate Majority leader Samuel Poghisio, Senators Ledama Olekina (Narok), Naomi Shiyonga (nominated), Gertrude Mushuruve (nominated) and Abshiro Halakhe (nominated).

On Monday evening the Ethics And Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) summoned Dr Mbaka to appear before it in order to assist in investigations over Prof Magoha’s conduct.
